Two outfalls in an estuary: Cooperative pollution minimization
نویسنده
چکیده
Two outfalls, each with given tidally averaged discharge rates, are discharging into the same narrow (rapidly mixed) estuary. The lowest achievable concentration peak (in position and time) for the principal contaminant species is attained with an ‘all or nothing’ discharging policy. The discharge rate is either ‘all’ that is allowed by concentration peak or is nothing. The ‘nothing’ regime corresponds to the water from the outfall with the relatively small discharge load, which would otherwise have carried the principal contaminant species to the other outfall with the least decay. Constructive (exact) algorithms are presented for the ‘all or nothing’ partition and for the cooperative discharge rates at the two outfalls.

Occurrence and distribution of antibiotics in the surface sediments of the Yangtze Estuary and nearby coastal areas.
The occurrence and distribution of five groups of antibiotics were investigated in the surface sediments of the Yangtze Estuary over four seasons. Four tetracyclines (TCs), sulfaquinoxaline (SQ), enrofloxacin (EFC) and thiamphenicol (TAP) were detected in all the samples, while sulfamerazine (SM) and sulfathiazole (ST) showed the lowest detection frequency. The detection frequencies and antibio...
متن کاملMagnetic properties of sediments in cores from the Mandovi estuary, western India: Inferences on provenance and pollution.
Magnetic properties of sediments were investigated in 7 gravity cores recovered along a transect of the Mandovi estuary, western India to understand their provenance and pollution. The maximum magnetic susceptibility of sediments was at least 6 times higher in the upper/middle estuary than in lower estuary/bay. The χfd% and χARM/SIRM of sediments indicated coarse, multi-domain and pseudo-single...
متن کاملDiffuse pollution in Oxford (Ohio, USA) watershed and performance of 'street sweeping' as a 'best management practice' (BMP).
Experimental results are described to evaluate the diffuse pollution profile according to land use in the catchments and street sweeping as a best management practice (BMP). We studied the variation of pollutant concentrations in outfalls discharging runoff from residential, commercial and high-traffic areas and in street sweeping. Pollution profiles varied with the land use in the catchments a...
متن کاملOcean outfalls as an alternative to minimizing risks to human and environmental health.
Submarine outfalls are proposed as an efficient alternative for the final destination of wastewater in densely populated coastal areas, due to the high dispersal capacity and the clearance of organic matter in the marine environment, and because they require small areas for implementation. This paper evaluates the probability of unsuitable bathing conditions in coastal areas nearby to the Ipane...
متن کاملDaytime Ozone Variation in Surface Air in a Subtropical Mangrove Estuary at Manakudy, South India
Surface ozone (SOZ) can be very harmful if it exceeds the threshold limit. It can accumulate over sea and can return back to the land along with the breeze. Rural and vegetation rich areas often record elevated levels of surface ozone because of the variations in Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) levels, wind velocity and direction. Similarly methane is also an important greenhouse gas and plays ...
